NagiB Parkour 2012
Pleasure of Work - Work of Pleasure - Dance!
August 20 - September 01, Maribor
NagiB Parkour 2012 is a two weeks dance event in which artists will be hosted to enjoy their work publicly while public will be stimulated to do some work of enjoying contemporary dance in all its non-representational, intimate, processual richness. We are hoping that while experiencing pleasure of work and working for their pleasure, both groups (artists and spectators) will manage to have a lot of fun together. It is our ultimate goal to be assistants and facilitators for this shared space/time of celebration that any proper festival should be.
Can the space of dance be a space of an ongoing inter-action between makers and spectators? Can the time of dance exist as a nonlinear time of process rather than a linear, result oriented time of production? Can the work of an artist/choreographer/dancer become accessible as a verb rather than a noun, available for sharing and participation before and beyond the moment of final presentation? What kind of skills audience needs to acquire to engage with an artistic process of making rather than by consuming finished product?
In an attempt to put these questions into a focus and devise practical tools for their exploration we would like to propose a shift from the concept of the festival toward a concept of Parkour.
Parkour as a format suggest a training in a particular kind of public dance - dance that is actively dealing with challenges and obstacles, that is transforming difficulties into opportunities, that is building a community through the shared effort and work that keep everybody on the move, both physically, intellectually and emotionally.
We would like to consider NagiB 2012 not as a festival but as a Parkour through the city of Maribor, an artistic training ground, complex space of numerous encounters where makers and their audiences continuously challenge themselves (and each other) to engage, share, enjoy art of dance.
In fact we are considering this complex Parkour movement in which the city become a host and a guest to itself as our main dance performance. Performance where map of the city IS a stage and citizens themselves become daily partners in dance.
